Happiness

A couple of days ago there was a charming list describing how to be happy posted on Talk 2 The Trees.  I realized today that I just can't get number 6 out of my head...

6. Do What They Love
Some statistics show that 80% of people dislike their jobs! No wonder there’s so many unhappy people running around. We spend a great deal of our life working. Choose a career that you enjoy – the extra money of a job you detest isn’t worth it. Make time to enjoy your hobbies and pursue special interests.

I realize that this may be easier said than done...but when I think about my life and what I want from it, I don't understand why it's necessary for me to be miserable working a job I dislike just for money.  I don't understand why anyone should have to.  We only get one shot at this, right?  Why not spend our time doing things we love and making the most out of every moment?
Maybe it's the string of retail jobs I've worked in my life.  I don't feel as though I'm doing anything truly important.  Maybe it's a naive thought.  Maybe I have a point.

Are you able to do what you love every day?  If so, what is it that you love?
If you aren't, why not?

I'm a bit torn on this one... sometimes people have to take jobs that arent the happiest thing in the world, but due to circumstance they just kinda have to stick it out...
At the moment im in the interview process of a job that would make me beyond happy. But in saying that its not what i want to do with my life. ultimately i would love to help people, most likely in hypnotherapy... but then i have all the people around me saying you wont be rich out of that, and you are absolutely right. Sometimes you have to put your happiness before money. i would rather be happy than wealthy! whats wealth if you are miserable!!

i hope you end up in a career that makes you happy :) x

I think about this all the time. I really dislike my job but unfortunately I need it to afford my house and what not. But it is scary because we really only do get one shot and I would love to be doing something i LOVE. Im hoping to make that reality someday. great topic :)

I totally agree!
I only work about three days a week and I bring in more money than most people do in 5 days. It's not the best job, but I work with fun people and I have a lot of free time to fill my days with things that I do enjoy.

Funny, I work at the same place as Ashley, but in a different department - I'm a casino cocktail waitress. Sometimes I really hate my job. I walk around for eight hours carrying a tray full of sodas, mentally rolling my eyes. Sometimes it doesn't bother me as much (usually when all the bills are paid.) I've been thinking about this subject for a while though and I don't like what I'm doing enough to spend so much time doing it, so I'm thinking of taking some pastry classes instead.

Alyssa: I completely agree...sometimes, your situation requires you to work whatever job you can. I suppose that's what depresses me about it, though...is that things get so hard for people that they have to do things that make them unhappy just for money, and bills...things that won't matter in 20 years.
But I hope that your interview process goes well, and that you're able to do what you love! Let me know if you get your new job!
Good luck! :)

Stephanie: Thank you! I'm sorry you dislike your job, and I hope you're able to do what you love someday. Someday soon! :)

gleenn: That's awesome! Good luck with your new career! I hope that it's everything you want it to be. That's such a big step to take!

Ashley: I used to work a at a chiropractor's office, where I only worked 3 days a week. I LOVED it. I had the rest of the week to do as I pleased, and plenty of time to get everything done. I'm glad that you have a job that you enjoy. Working with fun people always makes everything better. :)

Sweet T.: I know how you feel...I stand all day, and deal with customers who can't read and try to get more out of me than I can give them. It's always a nice feeling when the bills are paid, but I oftentimes wonder what that's truly worth. But I say, go for the pastry classes! That'd be a lot of fun! :)

XO, Allie.
