Friday Night Film - When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Meg Ryan, the queen of romantic comedies, stars in this super cute movie about falling head over heels for someone you can't stand.  The story begins in 1977, when Sally Albright, a slightly uptight journalism student agrees to ride to New York City with Harry Burns, the boyfriend of one of her close friends.  Along the way, they get into many discussions regarding men, women, and dating, and ultimately have opposite opinions.  Once they reach New York City, they part ways.

Five years later, they run into each other again on an airplane.  Sally is dating one of Harry's old friends, Joe, and Harry is engaged to a lady named Helen.  After getting into the same discussions about men, women, and relationships, they decide they cannot be friends.

They run into each other once more 5 years later in a bookstore.  They decide to go out for coffee, and they each learn that their respective relationships have ended.  They finally decide to be friends, and begin spending more time together.  After a few failed attempts at different relationships and run-ins with their exes, they realize that they were the ones in love all along.

In my opinion, this is one of the best romantic comedies ever made.  Billy Crystal is as hilarious as ever.  And honestly, who doesn't love Meg Ryan?  This is definitely a fun watch for a Friday night spent in. :)

Friday Night Film - Ten Things I Hate About You (1999)

I absolutely love this movie.  Playing heavily on teenage heartbreak and the desire to be different, Ten Thing I Hate About You is a fun, modern-day twist on The Taming of the Shrew.  Kat (Julia Stiles), is a cynical, somewhat rebellious high school student determined not to 'fit in'.  Much to her dismay, her younger sister, Bianca, craves the popularity that Kat has tried to steer her from.  Bianca longs to date and go out, but isn't allowed to until Kat does the same.  In a desperate attempt to date Bianca, new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon Levitt) devises a plan that would send Kat on a date with bad-boy Patrick (Heath Ledger), meanwhile using 'popular guy' Joey, who is also pining for Bianca, as a pawn in his plan.

Ten Things I Hate About You is quite the laugh, and Heath Ledger was as charming as ever.  I mean, who could ever forget his serenade scene?  He and Julia seem to have such chemistry in this film.  It's wonderful.  I hope you'll check this movie out if you haven't yet seen it!  I'm sure you'll love it.

Friday Night Film - Grease (1978)

For my very first film, I chose Grease.  For those of you who haven't seen it, you're in for a treat!

Grease is without a doubt one of my favorite movies.  Based on a broadway play of the same name, Grease is a musical that tells the story of two groups of friends, the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies, during their senior year of high school.  The story mostly focuses on greaser Danny (John Travolta), and clean-cut Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), who happen to fall in love one summer.

At fictional Rydell High School, Danny and Sandy meet up once more.  Now in a setting different from the beach, they realize their personal styles do not remotely fit together.  Throughout the movie, heartbroken Danny tries his hardest to win Sandy's affection once more.  Sandy, still in love with Danny, struggles with how to both stay true to herself and fit into Danny's world.
This movie is overflowing with 1950's style and upbeat song and dance.  If you've never heard John Travolta sing before, you need to watch this movie.

I also chose for Grease to be my first film in remembrance of two of it's stars - Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie, and Annette Charles, who played 'Cha Cha' DiGregorio.
